HUMAN GENETIC DISORDERS

genetics.jpg

Content Language Objective 1: Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of common human genetic disorders and inheritance using Punnett squares and pedigrees as analytical tools then explain orally or in written language the disease itself and its pattern of inheritance.

Class composition: This is a demonstration lesson for a group of biology students who completed cell biology and are beginning to study genetics. Additionally, students from a health class will be in attendance. The lesson is intended to revisit concepts in cell biology, introduce basic concepts in genetics and inheritance, and reinforce those concepts using common human genetic disorders as examples.

Lesson Rationale: This is a focused topical demonstration lesson designed to connect curricular ideas. In the 5E teaching/learning cycle, this lesson would bridge the engage/explore segments. Clearly student centered, this lesson relies heavily on student input and interaction.

Student Section:

Background knowledge quickwrite (5-7 minutes)
Using Google Drive, write what you have learned about cell biology, what you know about genetics and inheritance, Punnett squares, and pedigrees. This is an effort activity; your writing will be used in guiding the lesson and in planning and pacing future learning.

Background Knowledge Discussion/Q & A (5-7 minutes)
A few students will present big ideas from their quickwrites.

Note: The information below is intended to demonstrate useful ELA resources and strategies to teachers; for students, lessons regarding disease causes, prevention, treatments, etc. will be added in this unit prior to the culminating, project-based activity below.

View the TEDtalk (link is below) using whatever helps you learn best, such as subtitles in your first language, subtitles in English, or reading along with the transcript. Pause the video and write useful ideas from the presentation in your journal. You will be using this information to make plans to improve community health.
TEDtalk: Rebecca Onie: What if our healthcare system kept us healthy?

Now that we have a basic idea for inheritance of genetic diseases in families and some ideas about effective healthcare, your job is to use the link below as a resource.
ELL, ELA, ELS Health Resources
Your group will discuss health concerns and needs of the community, you will select appropriate sources and you will design a program to improve community health and well-being. Your group needs to create an outline with four basic ideas that will impact the community then present these ideas to the facilitator/teacher for approval.
